TIPS FOR WASHING WOOL KNITWEAR

Wool is a protein material of animal origin, very similar to the keratin in hair, obtained by periodically shearing animals. The various breeds of sheep, goats or rams produce different types of wool, whether mohair, merino, cashmere, alpaca, vicuna, camel, etc., with different characteristics in terms of length and thickness of the thread, which is reflected in thermoregulation, or the adaptation of animals to the more or less cold climates in which they live.

The longer the thread, the more valuable the wool: the external structure of the thread is not smooth, but has scales, cuticles, which in water, during washing, hydrate and tend to open, like the petals of a rose. If at that moment the wool is subjected to excessive rubbing, whether by hand or in the washing machine, the cuticles become irreparably stuck together, thus causing felting and shrinkage of the garments.

If you follow these simple rules, you can wash your sweater as many times as you want, ensuring its durability over time and preventing felting.

1. The water temperature must always be constant, from the beginning to the end of the wash, because wool "suffers" from temperature changes, for example between the wash water and the rinse water: in this case, in fact, the cuticles that open could close in a disorderly way and, getting stuck together, generate the phenomenon of felting.

2. To maintain the original shape of the sweaters, do not let them drain soaked in water, but do a light spin, lay them out flat and let them dry in a dry and ventilated place; if this is not possible, and they are hung out on a line instead, place the clothes pegs, which leave the imprint, in the hidden corners of the sweater, such as under the arms, in order to facilitate the ironing process.

3. Iron at the right temperature, as indicated on the label: you can use steam, indeed, just as you do with styling damp hair with a brush and hairdryer, you can reshape the sweater with damp heat, to eliminate the creases and twists created during washing, and bring it back to its original shape, as good as new. The ideal solution would be to use a heated and vacuum ironing board, which, by removing the residual humidity from the steam from the iron, delivers the sweater perfectly dry for storage.

4. If it is too complicated to follow points 1, 2, and 3, then take the item to a specialized laundry 😉.
